Are you looking to balance your hormones naturally? Here are my top three essential oils for balancing your hormones naturally.

3 Best Essential Oils For Women's Hormone Balance

If you’ve been following me on social media lately, you’ll know I’m all about hormone balance!

Since turning 40 this year, I have noticed it harder to balance my hormones. I’ve been experiencing symptoms such as:

  • bloating
  • brain fog
  • severe mood swings
  • irritablility
  • increased duration of PMS
  • low libido
  • breast tenderness

None of these symptoms are fun to deal with, just ask my family 😉

But rather than run to the doctor and be put on medications to try and relieve these symptoms, I want to dig deeper and try to heal my body naturally, from the source!

I posted a video on YouTube with three ways I’m balancing my hormones naturally:

Once of the ways I’ve been balancing my hormones naturally is with essential oils. I’ve known about them for years, I even had a few sitting in my cupboard collection dust. But the past couple of months, I’ve dusted them off and started using them daily. Surprisingly, I have found them VERY useful in managing my hormone imbalance.

Oils For Hormone Balance

In researching essential oils for women’s hormone issues, there were several essential oils that were often recommended, especially clary sage, thyme, and lavender. There are many others (including geranium, thyme, roman chamomile, bergamot, grapefruit, rose, ylang ylang, sandalwood, and rosemary) but I’m going to focus on the top 3 oils because they seem to be the most well researched for providing relief of hormonal symptoms for women and are pretty common oils that can be used for many different applications.

Clary Sage

To be honest with you, when someone recommended this essential oil to me years ago, I thought they were full of s***! I mean, how could one essential oil help with my PMS symptoms?!

I was proven wrong!

Clary Sage Essential Oil from doTERRA

Once I started using clary sage, I immediately felt a difference. Anytime I felt a mood swing coming on, I would quickly grab my bottle of clary sage and inhale the scent. Within a few seconds, I could feel my tension start to dissipate. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Phytotherapy Research found that inhalation of clary sage oil had the ability to reduce cortisol levels by 36%. Okay, so at least I knew I wasn’t going crazy 😉

Here’s why clary sage has been a go-to for women’s hormone issues:

It’s wonderful for alleviating pain, reducing the feeling of stress, and improving hormone balance (that about sums all of our pms/menstrual problems up right there.)

Clary sage has unique hormone-like components that help to balance out estrogen production in the body. Studies show that clary sage reduces pms and menstrual cramps.(2,3) In fact, it is so effective at relieving pain, another study showed clary sage to be quite effective in also relieving pain in childbirth (always check with a healthcare practitioner.)

Because clary sage helps balance out those estrogen levels, it’s an incredibly effective essential oil in the a wide array of hormone imbalances. So, whether you’re looking for natural remedies for PMS cramps during the month, or possibly already know you have excess estrogen in your body, clary sage is a great essential oil to consider adding to your essential oil regime.

The blend I like to use is ClaryCalm, from doTERRA. I prefer it because it’s a blend of essential oils that all help with hormone balance, such as ylang, ylang, geranium, roman chamomile, and more. You can check it out here. It’s an oil blend I use pretty much every single day.

Thyme

Thyme essential oil works to balance hormones by increasing our progesterone levels. Studies show low progesterone levels have a correlation with infertility, and so Thyme Oil is a great way to get those progesterone levels up.

Many women, like myself, are low in progesterone. Low progesterone levels have been linked with infertility, PCOS and depression as well as other imbalanced hormones within the body.

Improved progesterone makes thyme a great essential oil you can use to naturally balance out hormones in your body. Plus, it’s far better than turning to synthetic treatments, such as hormone replacement therapy, which can make you dependent on prescription drugs, mask symptoms while developing diseases in other parts of the body and often causing serious side effects.

Lavender

Lavender has many beneficial properties, including its ability to help the body balance hormones. This oil also offers pain relief for those suffering from abdominal cramps associated with menstrual symptoms.

One symptom of PMS or hormone imbalance is feeling emotional or depressed for no apparent reason. Lavender oil has been shown to decrease feelings of stress and depression. Research shows that inhalation of lavender can alleviate some of the depression and emotional symptoms of PMS.  Simply inhaling lavender for 10 minutes can begin to lessen these symptoms.

Using a diffuser would be a perfect way to inhale lavender in order to relieve PMS symptoms. Clary Sage and lavender are a wonderful combination to diffuse into the air to relieve stress or they can also be used individually.

How I Use These Oils For Hormone Balance

Aromatically

I love to diffuse my essential oils. Each day, I have my diffuser in the kitchen going, often with my favourite blends. Sometimes, I’ll just put a few drops of clarycalm or clary sage to help relieve feeling of anxiety or irritability.

I like to diffuse lavender or the Serenity blend before bed. These oils promote feeling of calm, peace, and restfulness. Or, I’ll rub them on the bottoms of my feet or on my wrist pulse points right before turning off my light to go to sleep.

Topically

I have the roller bottle of clarycalm, so often I’ll rub it right on my abdomen if I have any cramping, giving my abdomen and nice, gentle massage with the oils. The roller bottle contains fractionated coconut oil, so the oils are already diluted and safe to use on your skin.

If I’m feeling particularly moody, I’ll rub some on my pulse points.

You could also add 1/4 cup of Epsom salt to a warm bath, then add 3 drops of clary sage and 2 drops of lavender. Soak in the bath to help relieve PMS symptoms.

Do you use oils to help manage PMS or menstrual pain? What oils have you found to be effective and how do you use them?
