It’s almost allergy season! Did you know you can relieve your allergy symptoms naturally with essential oils? Here’s how!

Essential Oils for the Relief of Allergies. Relieve your allergy symptoms naturally with these essential oils.

It’s hard to believe that allergy season is almost upon us! I mean, we did just have about 15 inches of snow dumped on us. UGH.

But before we know it, spring will be here, and so will those pesky allergy symptoms.

I’m pretty lucky myself because I don’t suffer from allergy symptoms. However, every spring, my oldest son and my husband start sneezing, wiping their noses, and scratching their eyes.

At first I thought my son had a cold. But when it kept going on and on and on all spring, I knew it had to be allergies.

We used to turn to over the counter allergy medications to treat my family’s allergies. However, many of the medications are:

  1. Expensive.
  2. Make you drowsy.
  3. Take a long time to work.

Last year, when I started using my essential oils again, I found out that essential oils are actually wonderful for allergy relief! It’s amazing that we can use mother nature’s gifts to help heal us.

Essential Oil Blend for Allergy Relief

Peppermint, Lavender, and Lemon

  • Peppermint oil is probably the most widely known relief for congestion. Peppermint acts as an expectorant and provides relief for allergies, as well as colds, coughs, sinusitis, asthma and bronchitis.
  • Lavender essential oil has properties that can work as a natural antihistamine.
  • Lemon essential oil may help relieve congestion or mucus build-up.

Because peppermint is such a strong oil, I always recommend diluting it with a carrier oil, like fractionated coconut oil. I personally use diluted peppermint oil on my children. For MORE info about essential oils and your children, please read this article.

Make sure you choose a therapeutic quality essential oil brand to get the best results.

I use and recommend doTERRA; they are a high-quality brand that uses third-party testing and offers therapeutic grade oils. I’ve noticed more benefits since I started using only doTERRA essential oils compared to other brands.

Ways to use this blend:

Diffuse: Add about 2 – 3 drops of lemon, lavender, and peppermint essential oil to your diffuser at night.

Roll on: Add 3 – 15 drops of lavender essential oil, 3 – 15 drops of lemon essential oil, and 3 – 15 drops of peppermint essential oil to a roller bottle.

If you’re making this for younger children (under age 6), use 2-5 drops of each oil to start with. I would not use this blend on children under the age of 3. (Talk with a qualified aromatherapist if you are not sure.) Start with the lower dose and work your way up if you find the lower dose isn’t effective.

Top with fractionated coconut oil or your favorite carrier blend and put the roller bottle cap on firmly.

Apply this DIY essential oil blend for seasonal allergies on the spine, back of the neck, and/or on the soles of the feet.

Roll on every 2-4 hours or as needed.

Internal: A convenient way to use these oils is in a softgel. doTERRA makes these TriEase Softgels to protect against seasonal and environmental elements and to promote a healthy respiratory system when needed most. Each softgel contains equal parts of Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint essential oils, known for their ability to maintain clear breathing and a healthy immune response when combined together.

These are great to have on hand when travelling or attending outdoor events.

Other Essential Oils For Allergy Relief

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus oil opens up the lungs and sinuses, thereby improving circulation and symptoms of allergies.

Diffuse five drops of eucalyptus in a diffuser or apply it topically to the chest and temples. To clear the nasal passages and relieve congestion, pour a cup of boiling water into a bowl and add 1–2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil. Then place a towel over your head and inhale deeply for 5–10 minutes. I also like to add a couple of drops to my shower for a nice steaming effect.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca)

This powerful oil can destroy airborne pathogens that cause allergies. Diffusing tea tree oil in the home will kill mold, bacteria and fungi. It is an antiseptic agent and it has anti-inflammatory properties.

Use tea tree oil on skin rashes and hives or as a household cleaner. When using tea tree topically, add 2–3 drops to a clean cotton ball and gently apply to the area of concern. For people with sensitive skin, dilute tea tree with a carrier oil first, like coconut or almond oil.
